sameAs: linking your website to your other profiles
sameAs is a Schema.org property that lists URLs of other pages identifying the same entity, such as your LinkedIn page, Google Business Profile or Wikidata item. Adding it to your Organization or Person markup tells search engines that these profiles all describe one business or person.
The definition
Schema.org defines sameAs as the "URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity", for example a Wikipedia page, a Wikidata entry or an official website.
Google lists sameAs among the recommended properties for Organization structured data, describing it as a page on another site with more information about your organization, such as a social media or review site profile. Google also says Organization markup has no required properties: add every one that applies.
What to include
| Include | Leave out |
|---|---|
| LinkedIn company or personal page | Articles that only mention you |
| Google Business Profile | Profiles you abandoned |
| Crunchbase profile | Another business with a similar name |
| Official social accounts | Pages you don't control or that aren't about you |
| Wikidata item, if one exists | Every directory you've ever been listed on |
A copy-ready example
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Organization",
"@id": "https://www.example.com/#organization",
"name": "Example Heating & Air",
"url": "https://www.example.com/",
"logo": "https://www.example.com/logo.png",
"telephone": "+1-555-010-0000",
"sameAs": [
"https://www.linkedin.com/company/example-heating-air/",
"https://www.facebook.com/exampleheatingair",
"https://www.yelp.com/biz/example-heating-and-air-pasadena"
]
}
Use the same @id everywhere you refer to the organization on your site, so every page points at one entity.
sameAs only works if the profiles match
If your LinkedIn page says "Example HVAC", your listing says "Example Heating and Air Inc." and your website says "Example Heating & Air", sameAs links them, but every system reading them still sees three names. Fix the names first. Lesson 4 shows why.
Frequently asked questions
- What should I put in sameAs?
- Official profiles you control or that are clearly about you, such as LinkedIn, Crunchbase, your Google Business Profile, official social accounts and a Wikidata item if you have one.
- Can I list directory listings in sameAs?
- You can list profiles on reputable directories that are clearly about your business. Don't list pages that merely mention you, pages about someone else, or profiles you don't keep up to date.
- Does sameAs improve rankings?
- It isn't a ranking boost. It helps search engines connect the facts on your profiles to the same entity.
