How name variants split a business in AI answers

By Joel Maldonado · Last reviewed 12 October 2026

When a business appears under several names, each version can be treated as a separate, weaker entity. In NRLC.ai's October 2026 studies, Perplexity named one Dubai clinic as "Symphony Clinic" 7 times and "Symphony Beauty Clinic" 8 times, and another clinic chain under 8 different names. Using one name everywhere keeps all the mentions on one entity.

What the data showed

NRLC.ai asked ChatGPT and Perplexity customer questions in three markets in October 2026 (Singapore tuition centres, Dubai aesthetic clinics and California HVAC companies) and recorded every business named. To count mentions properly, name variants had to be merged by hand. These are real examples from the answers:

Business Names as written in the answers
A Dubai aesthetic clinic "Symphony Beauty Clinic" (8 answers), "Symphony Clinic" (7)
A Dubai clinic group "Novomed", "Novomed Mirdif", "Novomed Centers Marina", "Novomed Dubai Marina", "Novomed Fillers and Botox Clinic" and more: 8 variants
A Dubai skin clinic "SKIN111", "Skin111", "SKINIII Medical & Aesthetics Clinic"
A Singapore tuition chain "EduFirst Learning Centre", "EduFirst", "EduFirst Tuition Centre", "Edufirst Learning Centre", plus 11 branch labels in different formats

Counted separately, Symphony's mentions would have been split in half. A reader of the answers, or a system building a picture of the market, sees two smaller clinics instead of one clinic with twice the presence.

Why it happens

AI assistants with web search build answers from the pages they retrieve, and repeat the names those pages use. The clinic's own site, its booking app listing and three directories may each spell it differently, and each answer copies whichever source it used.

Branch names are a strength when they're consistent

The same studies show that branch labels help when they follow one format. ChatGPT often named the branch, such as "EduFirst Learning Centre (Ang Mo Kio)", and Perplexity named "SKIN111, Palm Jumeirah Mall" and "Aire Serv of Temecula". A branch label that matches the area people ask about puts that branch in the answer for that area.

The fix

  1. Choose the canonical name. The exact spelling, capitalisation and legal suffix you will use everywhere.
  2. Choose a branch format. For example "Brand Name, Area".
  3. Update every listing. Website, Google Business Profile, booking apps, directories and social profiles.
  4. Mark it up. Use the canonical name in Organization or LocalBusiness markup, add alternateName only for genuine alternative names, and link your profiles with sameAs.
  5. Check again in a month. Ask the same questions and see which names come back.

Frequently asked questions

Why do AI assistants use different names for the same business?
They copy names from the sources they retrieve. If your website, booking listing and directories use different names or branch labels, answers repeat those differences.
Should each branch have its own name?
Use one brand name plus a consistent location label, such as "Brand Name, Business Bay", in the same format everywhere. AI answers often named branches this way, which matches how people ask.
How do I find the name variants out there?
Search your brand on Google, Maps and the main directories in your industry, and ask ChatGPT and Perplexity who they recommend for your service and area. Note every spelling you see.
